Latest thoughts.

I've now read through all the Modules 1-3 including all the Readings etc and my next task is to do all the OLJ posts for each of those modules. Once I get those 'blogged' I'm going to go through the many extra links and suggestions on FB and see where they take me.

Then it's on to Modules 4 & 5 and their OLJ posts and extra FB links etc. I haven't even looked at anything on the recommended reading list, no time at all. I have managed to get some library material and have skimmed some about the key applications such as Twitter and FB. I find it all very interesting but would like more time to do everything and take it all in.

I MUST blog!!

It's time to make myself write!. So many thoughts about this whole course and I should have written sooner so as to map the changes better.

Currently I find Facebook very good but haven't said much to my fellow students. You see the same names all the time and it makes me think that they are the hard workers, but possibly also the most gregarious...I don't know??

Twitter I have used purposefully a few times in order to fufill course requirements, but as I only have web access it seems to lose spontaneity which I think is one of the benefits of the application so I'm not enjoying it much. Even the contacts I have re my daughter's medical condiiton have so far not been helpful.

Delicious is a much used work tool but my personal delicious 'not so much'.

Second Life just annoys me. I once attended a little workshop on it and came home and found my PC couldn't even open the application due to it's love of bandwidth. Now I have an upgraded PC and can access it but find that it opens the scenes quite slowly and I spend a long time just waiting for the new area to show itself fully. I read about some areas in a book called 'This book is overdue' and tried to get to tham but my navigation skills were so clumsy that I once again spent ages getting no where. Plus, inevitably, frequently when you come across a group of people they just seem to be sitting around swearing! I haven't yet managed to find a group of ordinary people who were just having a meeting, or a book club, or anything mildly interesting. I believe it does exist but my skills are too poor and my PC too slow to make it a constructive experience.

OLJ creation; first entry

Social networking is communicating with others either socially including family friends and communities of interest or professionally. Participants add content by exchanging information, images, photos and video. It resembles the interaction of a meeting with a friend or colleague in a real world networking situation but instead takes place virtually via the internet. Therefore instead of these exchanges reaching only those in your immediate vicinity in any situation they may now reach the world in that same minute.

There are well known social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter but SN happens in many ways on many sites such as Amazon by providing the facility for online reviews and discussions. Providing content and exchanging views and news is everywhere on the internet.

I currently use Facebook Twitter Delicious Flickr and LibraryThing. FB is used daily, the others are spasmodic and I rarely contribute. I think it would be accurate to say I have joined many things to learn about them but apart from Facebook don’t actually use them much. I don’t use anything professionally. I do follow some interesting librarians’ blogs and on Twitter but don’t participate by commenting.
I would like to take away 2 things from this course. Personally I would definitely like to be less of a lurker everywhere I go on the internet. More importantly I would like to see how libraries can implement the use of social networking to provide services and facilities for customers that they would actually use! How do libraries achieve that? Our efforts at a Book Club wiki and a Lib – Education blog were unsuccessful

Now is the time to revive my old blog. This was used as a learning tool in a Web.2 course completed last year. We touched briefly on lots of web.2 tools which gave us the opportunity to find out just what all this new terminology actually meant. The blog was the first thing set up and in it we were required to enter quick thoughts on exploring each new application.

It was actually a fun course designed to give us a "quick and dirty' tour of the latest! In this it succeeded but I haven't touched this blog since the course finished a year ago.
